Our Whiting True Blue was specifically bred to produce blue eggs,  while breeding to the Standard of Perfection (SOP). We carefully select our broodstock through a thorough 7 to 9 carding process.

Appearance:

The Whiting True Blue's appearance can vary somewhat due to its hybrid nature, but here are the general features:

  • Feathers: Whiting True Blue chickens tend to have a variety of feather colors, including white, gray, or brown. They can exhibit a mix of colors depending on their lineage.
  • Size: These birds are generally medium-sized, with hens weighing around 5 to 6 pounds and roosters weighing slightly more, typically 6 to 7 pounds.
  • Body: They have a typical chicken build with a robust, healthy body structure. They are not overly large but still substantial in size compared to some of the smaller egg-laying breeds.
  • Legs: Their legs are often white or pale, similar to their feather coloration.

Egg Production:

The primary appeal of the Whiting True Blue is their ability to lay blue eggs. These eggs are a beautiful, soft blue color, which can range from a pale to a deeper, vibrant blue.

  • Egg Size: The eggs are medium to large, and are typically light blue in color, although the shade can vary depending on the individual bird.
  • Egg Production: Whiting True Blues are consistent layers, often laying around 250 to 300 eggs per year. This makes them excellent egg producers, particularly for those looking for blue eggs as part of a diverse egg collection.
  • Egg Quality: The eggs are typically quite strong-shelled and have a rich, healthy yolk.

Temperament:

  • Personality: The Whiting True Blue is known for being friendly, curious, and docile. These chickens are generally easy to handle, making them good for families and smaller backyard flocks. They are also known to be relatively calm and not too flighty, although they may be a bit more independent than some other breeds.
  • Hardiness: Whiting True Blues are hardy and can adapt to a variety of climates, which makes them suitable for both cold and warmer weather. They are resilient and can handle different conditions as long as they are given adequate shelter and food.
  • Foraging Ability: Like many egg-laying breeds, they are good foragers and enjoy scratching around in a free-range environment. If allowed to free-range, they can find a good portion of their food by foraging, which helps supplement their diet.
